Moves into backup RB role
Akers had six carries for 46 yards and two receptions for seven yards in Sunday's win over the Colts.
Analysis: Akers played on 16 of the offense's 73 snaps as he essentially got two series in place of starter Aaron Jones, the latter of whom had 21 carries for 64 yards and four receptions for 18 yards. Ty Chandler didn't play any snaps on offense as it looks like Akers has overtaken him to be the primary backup running back. It appears Akers will be the running back who gets some work each game to try to keep Jones fresh.

Working as No. 3 back
Akers is active for Sunday's game against the Lions after being acquired from the Texans on Tuesday, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Meanwhile, Myles Gaskin is a healthy inactive for Sunday's game. Akers will work as the No. 3 running back, but he may not see much playing time with lead back Aaron Jones (hamstring) set to play. Ty Chandler will work as Jones' backup.

Traded to Minnesota
The Vikings acquired Akers and a 2026 conditional seventh-round pick from the Texans on Tuesday in exchange for a 2026 conditional sixth-round pick, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Minnesota has now traded for Akers for the second season in a row, as the Vikings previously acquired him from the Rams last September. He made six appearances for the Vikings in 2023 before rupturing his right Achilles' tendon in November and requiring surgery, but Akers recovered quicker than anticipated from the major injury. After joining Houston on a one-year deal in the offseason, he made the Texans' Week 1 roster and suddenly found himself in a lead role out of the backfield by Week 2,…read more

Loses playing time
Akers had two carries for minus-1 yards in Sunday's 41-21 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: As expected, Akers' role was significantly impacted by the returns of Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce. Akers was on the field for just two snaps, which came during Houston's final possession. He should considered the fourth running back behind Mixon, Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale, who played 18 snaps Sunday.

Reduced role expected Week 6
Akers could be in line for a drop in touches and snaps in Sunday's game against New England, as Dameon Pierce (hamstring) carries no injury designation into the and Joe Mixon (ankle) is listed as questionable on the Texans' injury report.
Analysis: Mixon is the Texans' clear lead back when healthy, and if the team saw enough from him to keep him active Week 6, he should start after sitting out the last three games. Even if the Texans opt to give Mixon another game off, Pierce -- who had missed the previous four games -- could still work ahead of Akers as the top option on the ground. While Mixon and Piercer were both sidelined each of the previous three weeks, Akers earned at least nine carries in each contest, but he averaged just 3.7…read more

May lose lead back role Week 6
Akers may not be the Texans' lead back Week 6 against the Patriots, if the report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston that Dameon Pierce (hamstring) is expected to play holds up over the next few days.
Analysis: Pierce, who has been sidelined the last four games, practiced Wednesday in a limited fashion, but head coach DeMeco Ryans was optimistic about the running back's chances to play Sunday. "He's done a great job with his rehab process and he's back out working, so we're expecting to have him ready to go for the game," Ryans said. Akers and Dare Ogunbowale have shared the backfield snaps while both Pierce and Joe Mixon (ankle) were unavailable the last four weeks. Akers has posted modest numbers…read more

Scores TD while splitting touches
Akers rushed nine times for 42 yards and a touchdown while catching two of three targets for five yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Bills.
Analysis: Dare Ogunbowale got the first five touches among Texans running backs, but Akers made the most of his first two opportunities once he checked in, breaking off an 11-yard run immediately followed by a 15-yard touchdown run. Neither Texans running back found much running room after that point, and while Akers finished as the team's leading rusher, he had only 11 touches to Ogunbowale's 21. If the Texans get Joe Mixon (ankle) or Dameon Pierce (hamstring) back against the Patriots in Week 6, Akers…read more

In line for another start
Akers is expected to serve as the Texans' starting running back due to Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) being inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: While Mixon and Pierce remain sidelined for their third and fourth straight games, respectively, Akers appears poised to lead the Houston backfield once again, with Dare Ogunbowale and J.J. Taylor on hand behind Akers for change-of-pace work. In the team's 24-20 win over the Jaguars last weekend, Akers carried 13 times for 53 yards and was not targeted in the passing game. Meanwhile, Taylor logged six carries for 18 yards and Ogunbowale rushed twice for seven yards and caught all four of his…read more

May have more competition Sunday
Akers may be see Dameon Pierce (hamstring) added back to the Texans backfield Sunday against the Bills, as the latter is questionable to play in the contest, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: While Joe Mixon (ankle) will miss a third game in a row this weekend, Pierce put himself in a position to return for the first time since Week 1 after logging a limited practice Friday. If Pierce is active Sunday, he won't necessarily take on a large workload, considering Akers has been preparing for a third consecutive start, per Wilson. However, in such a scenario, Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale would be on hand for any RB reps that don't go to Akers. In Weeks 3 and 4, Akers combined for 22…read more

Trending toward lead role Week 5
Akers is preparing to be the Texans' lead back Week 5 against the Bills, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Akers is poised to be the No. 1 back for a third consecutive game, as both Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) have been non-participants this week. Meanwhile, Akers, Dare Ogunbowale and J.J. Taylor haven't been listed on Houston's injury report. Akers has 106 yards on 29 carries (3.7 YPC) and caught two of four targets for 11 yards and a touchdown this season. That includes two red-zone carries and one target inside the 20-yard line, on which he scored.

Modest numbers in win
Akers carried the ball 13 times for 53 yards in Sunday's 24-20 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: The veteran running back made his second straight start due to both Joe Mixon (ankle), and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) being unavailable, and Akers was a little more effective on the ground than he was last week. The receiving TD he used to salvage his Week 3 performance went to Dare Ogunbowale this time around, however. Akers' role and volume in Week 5 against the Bills will be dependent on the health of the two RBs ahead of him on the Houston depth chart.

Gets into end zone in loss
Akers carried the ball nine times for 21 yards and caught one of three targets for an eight-yard touchdown in Sunday's 34-7 loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: The game got away from the Texans early, and Akers was bottled up when Houston tried to get its ground attack going. The running back did haul in a third-quarter TD from C.J. Stroud, however, which was his first score of the season. Akers' lead role Sunday was the result of an ankle injury to Joe Mixon, and if Mixon is able to return in Week 4 against the Jaguars, Akers' touch volume will almost certainly decline.

Set to see added work Sunday
Akers is expected to take on an expanded workload Sunday against the Vikings with Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) both inactive.
Analysis: Tom Pelissero of NFL Network relays that Akers is in line to get the starting nod Sunday, with Dare Ogunbowale, British Brooks and J.J. Taylor available as depth options behind him. Akers was inactive for Week 1 while completing his recovery from a torn Achilles' tendon but was productive in a backup role behind Mixon in the Week 2 win over the Bears, carrying seven times for 32 yards while reeling in his lone target for a three-yard gain, though he did fumble once during a key point of the…read more

Preparing to start against Vikings
Akers is preparing to start Sunday's game against the Vikings, as Joe Mixon (ankle) is listed as doubtful and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) has been ruled out, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Akers got seven carries Week 2 against the Bears, as Mixon spent part of the game in the locker room tending to his ankle injury and Pierce didn't play. The former Rams and Vikings running back rushed for 32 yards on those rushes but also lost a fumble by the goal line. Could be headed for Week 3 start
Akers took first-team snaps at practices Wednesday and Thursday while Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) sat out both sessions, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: A healthy inactive Week 1 despite completing his recovery from the torn left Achilles' tendon he suffered last November without any setbacks, Akers could suddenly find himself in a leading role out of the backfield for a potent Houston offense two weeks later. As Wilson notes, the ankle injury that Mixon suffered in the second half of last Sunday's win over the Bears isn't regarded as a long-term concern, but the back-to-back absences at practice make it increasingly likely that he'll be…read more

Loses key fumble with Mixon hurt
Akers rushed seven times for 32 yards, caught his lone target for three yards and lost a fumble in Sunday's 19-13 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Akers got some extra opportunities as Joe Mixon spent part of the second half in the locker room due to an ankle injury and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) didn't dress. The former Rams and Vikings running back didn't make a good first impression in his Texans debut, as Akers fumbled on Chicago's 4-yard line when Houston was on the verge of putting the game away in the fourth quarter. Active versus Chicago
Akers is active for Sunday night's game against the Bears.
Analysis: After being a healthy scratch in Week 1 against the Colts, Akers is in uniform versus Chicago, with Dameon Pierce (hamstring) inactive. He'll be in the mix -- along with Dare Ogunbowale and British Brooks -- for complementary snaps behind top back Joe Mixon.

Not suiting up
Akers (coach's decision) is inactive Week 1 against the Colts.
Analysis: Akers was given steady carries throughout the preseason, but looking back, that likely wasn't a great sign for his playing time prospects. The Texans will move forward in Week 1 with Joe Mixon as the presumed starter, and Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale available in a backup capacity. Even undrafted rookie free agent British Brooks made it to the active roster, although that's most likely due to work on special teams.

Leading rusher Saturday
Akers took seven carries for 53 yards and caught three of four targets for 19 yards in Saturday's preseason finale against the Rams.
Analysis: Akers was first player to record a touch in Saturday's exhibition, as the veteran tries to latch onto the Texans' 53-man roster ahead of the Sept. 27 deadline. The 2020 second-round pick was brought in for depth after starter Joe Mixon suffered an injury this preseason. The latter has since healed and was a healthy scratch Saturday, leaving any potential fantasy value for Akers in Houston in the rearview mirror.

Forty-one yards from scrimmage
Akers carried six times for 17 yards and caught all three targets for 24 yards in Friday's 20-12 preseason win over the Steelers. He also returned one kickoff for 23 yards.
Analysis: Akers followed up an effective Hall of Fame Game and is showing no ill effects of the knee injury that wiped out the second half of the 2023 season. The Texans added him to the roster when they learned Joe Mixon (quadriceps) was dealing with an injury, so his stay on the roster could last as long as it takes Mixon to heal. All of Akers' 15 offensive snaps came during the second half.

Looks effective in HOF Game
Akers rushed five times for 13 yards and brought in both targets for 18 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' 21-17 preseason loss to the Bears on Thursday.
Analysis: Aaron Rodgers' lightning-fast recovery from his Week 1 Achilles tear last season rightfully garnered plenty of attention, but Akers has now overcome the same injury on each leg in well under a year on both occasions. His return to the field Thursday night came just under nine months from when he suffered his most recent tear in Week 9 of last season while with the Vikings. Signs with Texans
Akers (Achilles) and the Texans agreed on a contract Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Akers worked out for Houston on Sunday, and the team must've seen enough from the running back, inking him to a contract ahead of their training camp beginning Tuesday. The 25-year-old suffered the second Achilles tear of his career in November, and it's unclear how close he is to being ready for full contact at practice.

Works out with Houston
The Texans hosted Akers (Achilles) for a workout Sunday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Akers tore his Achilles for the second time in his career last November and finished the season on IR. Prior to the injury, the veteran tallied 167 rushing yards and a touchdown on 60 carries and added 70 receiving yards on 11 receptions over seven games between the Rams and Vikings. Houston is looking to add running-back depth behind starter Joe Mixon and backup Dameon Pierce, among others.

Not tendered by Vikings
Akers (Achilles) wasn't tendered by the Vikings, making him an unrestricted free agent, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Akers suffered the second Achilles tear of his career in November, so he could miss most or all of the 2024 season. Once healthy enough to resume his NFL career, the 2020 second-round draft pick of the Rams will be free to sign with any team that shows interest.

The Vikings placed Akers (Achilles) on injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: Akers is done for the 2023 season due to a torn left Achilles' tendon suffered during Sunday's win over the Falcons. Previously, Akers was forced to miss most of the 2021 season after rupturing his right Achilles' tendon, but he's now dealing with an issue on the left side. Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Akers underwent an MRI that confirmed he sustained a torn left Achilles' tendon in Sunday's 31-28 win over Atlanta, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Akers showed some promise during his six appearances with the Vikings following a September trade with the Rams, rushing 38 times for 138 yards and a touchdown while securing 11 of 12 targets for 70 yards. However, his season will be cut short due to the second Achilles injury of his career, after he previously missed most of the 2021 season after rupturing his right Achilles' tendon in an offseason workout. Achilles' injury feared
Coach Kevin O'Connell relayed after Sunday's 31-28 win over the Falcons that the Vikings believe Akers has an Achilles' injury, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Akers' injury was initially deemed an ankle issue, but it looks like the running back's Achilles is what's ailing him in the wake of Sunday's contest. If the injury is confirmed, it would be the second time in his career that Akers has hurt his Achilles. If he's forced to miss time, Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu would remain on hand to work behind Alexander Mattison in the Vikings' backfield.

Akers carried the ball nine times for 19 yards and a touchdown and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Packers.
Analysis: While he didn't gain much real estate and saw seven fewer touches than Alexander Mattison, Akers' six-yard TD run in the first quarter was the biggest play either running back made in the game. Both backs could be in line for much more significant roles in the second half of the season, as Kirk Cousins left Sunday's contest with what could be a season-ending Achilles injury. Workload boost in Week 7 win
Akers rushed 10 times for 31 yards and brought in two of three targets for 30 yards in the Vikings' 22-17 win over the 49ers on Monday night.
Analysis: One game after logging just two touches over nine snaps, Akers' involvement shot up to the highest it's been since his arrival in Minnesota. Akers' receiving yardage total was also a season-best figure and allowed him to outgain Alexander Mattison by a 61-42 margin in total yards on the night. Plays just nine snaps
Akers had one carry for eight yards and one reception for seven yards on his lone target in Sunday's 19-13 win at Chicago.
Analysis: Akers played just nine snaps on offense, which is lower than his previous two games with the Vikings. Alexander Mattison played on 43 snaps and had 18 carries for 44 yards. It was a little surprising Akers didn't get more opportunities with Mattison struggling with a 2.4 YPC. Akers had five carries for 15 yards and two receptions for three yards on two targets in Sunday's loss to Kansas City.
Analysis: Akers' share of the backfield work increased slightly in his second game with the Vikings, but Alexander Mattison remained the team's primary running back. Akers played on 21 of the offense's 73 snaps while Mattison logged 37. Mattison had eight carries and two receptions. Akers likely will remain in a similar role unless Mattison stumbles.

Posts 51 total yards in debut
Akers had five carries for 40 yards and two receptions for 11 yards on two targets in Sunday's 21-13 win at Carolina.
Analysis: Akers served as the backup to starter Alexander Mattison, as Ty Chandler didn't play any snaps on offense. Akers took over as the lead back on one series and played on 14 of the offense's 48 snaps, while Mattison played 33 snaps. Mattison had more touches (17 carries and one target) and was efficient with 95 yards at 5.6 YPC. Unlikely to play Sunday
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that Akers isn't expected to suit up Sunday against the Chargers, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: Given that he was dealt from L.A. to Minnesota on Wednesday and passed a physical Thursday, Akers didn't have much time to get up to speed with his new squad, despite his previous experience working with O'Connell on the Rams in 2020 and 2021. It remains to be seen how much Akers may be utilized out of the Vikings backfield this weekend, assuming he's active. Could play Sunday
Akers is likely to be available to play at least some snaps in Sunday's game against the Chargers given his familiarity with Minnesota's offense, which is modeled after the Rams' scheme, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips told ESPN.
Analysis: Akers was traded to Minnesota along with a conditional seventh-round 2026 draft pick from the Rams on Wednesday for a conditional sixth-round 2026 draft pick. While Akers may play this week, it's hard to see him having much of a role given he'll have been with his new team just a few days. Akers fell out of favor in the Rams backfield after just one game this season, following up an ugly 22-carry, 29-yard effort Week 1 by going on the inactive list Week 2. Coach confirms trade talks
Head coach Sean McVay confirmed Monday that the Rams are "headed" toward trading Akers, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Leading up to Akers being a healthy inactive for the Rams' Week 2 loss to the 49ers, multiple reports had already indicated that the fourth-year running back was headed for the trade block while Los Angeles prepared to install second-year player Kyren Williams as its new lead back. McVay backed up those reports Monday, noting that general manager Les Snead had already spoken with "a handful of teams" about acquiring Akers. Until a trade is executed, Akers will likely continue to remain…read more

Team engaged in trade talks
The Rams have engaged in trade talks involving Akers, who was a healthy scratch for Sunday's 30-23 loss to the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Akers' spot on Los Angeles' roster once again seems up in the air, a familiar situation after he demanded a trade early in the 2022 season -- although unlike last year, Rapoport reports that no significant issues have arisen between the running back and the team this time around. Akers closed out the 2022 campaign with three straight 100-yard rushing performances, so it's possible he could draw interest from a team in need of backfield help. Meanwhile, Kyren Williams scored twice operating as…read more

Inactive for Sunday's game
Akers is inactive for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
Analysis: Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic relays via Jay Glazer of Fox that the Rams are reportedly attempting to trade Akers, who is a healthy scratch Sunday. With Akers not in the team's backfield mix versus San Francisco on Sunday and possibly beyond, Kyren Williams figures to lead the Los Angeles backfield in Week 2, with Ronnie Rivers and Royce Freeman also candidates to mix in.

Set to be healthy inactive
Akers is expected to be inactive for the Rams for Sunday's game against the 49ers and could be on the trade block, Jay Glazer reported Sunday on "Fox NFL Sunday."
Analysis: Akers drew the start in the Rams' Week 1 win over the Seahawks, but he gained just 29 yards on 22 carries. Despite Akers' poor efficiency, the Rams' decision to drop him down the depth chart comes as a surprise after he finished the 2022 season with three straight 100-plus-yard rushing games. Kyren Williams will step up into a bigger role as a result of Akers apparently losing hold of the top backfield job.

TD saves inefficient day
Akers rushed 22 times for 29 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-13 win over Seattle.
Analysis: Akers was having trouble passing the line of scrimmage Sunday, posting an abysmal mark of 1.3 YPC. A late touchdown from the 24-year-old saved this from being a horrendous fantasy performance. Kyren Williams (15-52-2) clearly outperformed Akers out of the gates while also receiving two targets to the latter's none. Akers' fantasy managers can only hang their hats on the sheer volume Akers received Sunday, but the Rams are unlikely to run the ball 40 times every week. It will be interesting to…read more

Having strong offseason
Akers, per coach Sean McVay, is "going to be a central figure in this offense," Cameron DaSilva of TheRamsWire reports.
Analysis: The end of the 2022 season saw the one-time second-round pick finally flash some of his tantalizing potential with back-to-back-to-back 100-yard rushing games, three touchdowns and an impressive 5.5 YPC over the Rams' final three contests. Ends on three-game, 100-yard streak
Akers rushed 21 times for 104 yards and caught all three of his targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 19-16 overtime loss to Seattle.
Analysis: Akers had a falling out with the Rams earlier in the season, but he and the team got back on the same page as the 2020 second-round pick finished the campaign with three consecutive 100-yard performances on the ground. Akers rushed 188 times for 786 yards and seven touchdowns overall, and he could open the 2023 season as the Rams' lead back.

Eclipses century mark in loss
Akers rushed 19 times for 123 yards and brought in one of two targets for 10 yards in the Rams' 31-10 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
Analysis: Akers saw backfield mate Malcolm Brown vulture the Rams' only touchdown, but he otherwise continued a highly encouraging stretch of play that's boosting his fantasy stock for 2023. The third-year back now has back-to-back 100-yard performances for the first time in his career, and although his passing game involvement took a slight hit after multi-reception efforts in Weeks 15 and 16, Akers still delivered nicely for fantasy managers riding his late-season surge. Akers rushed 23 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns while catching both of his targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 51-14 win over Denver.
Analysis: Akers appeared to be in the holiday spirit after gifting his fantasy managers three scores on Christmas Day. This was easily the 23-year-old's best performance of his career, which is especially impressive considering it came against one of the league's top defenses. Finishes with 90 total yards Monday
Akers rushed 12 times for 65 yards and brought in all three targets for 35 yards in the Rams' 24-12 loss to the Packers on Monday night.
Analysis: Akers was about the only bright spot for the Rams' mostly moribund offense, with the third-year back making an impact from his team's very first play. Akers ripped off a 15-yard gain on that initial carry, and he was also responsible for 23 total yards on Los Angeles' third possession, which culminated in the team's first points of the game, a 33-yard Matt Gay field goal. Finds end zone again in win
Akers rushed 12 times for 42 yards and a touchdown while bringing in his only target for one yard in the Rams' 17-16 win over the Raiders on Thursday night. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Akers once again served as the clear-cut lead back over rookie backfield mate Kyren Williams, but he ultimately logged a fairly modest workload overall. Nevertheless, the third-year pro crossed the goal line for the third time in the last two games on a one-yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining, a score that proved critical in the comeback. Scores two TDs against Seattle
Akers carried the ball 17 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Seahawks. He also caught his only target for zero yards.
Analysis: Rookie Kyren Williams appeared to be on the verge of taking over the lead role in the Rams' backfield last week, but Akers roared back Sunday with a one-yard TD plunge in the first quarter and a six-yard score with just under three minutes left in the fourth that seemed like it might give his team a 23-20 win before Geno Smith answered back for Seattle. Overcomes illness
Akers (illness) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Seattle, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Akers was a full practice participant Friday after missing the previous two days. He and Kyren Williams figure to continue splitting work in the backfield, though it's possible the rookie's share continues to grow with the Rams out of the playoff hunt and perhaps not viewing Akers as part of their future beyond 2022. For now, he should get some carries, but within the context of an injury-riddled offense full of backup linemen and now led by backup quarterback John Wolford.

Still not practicing
Akers (illness) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Akers has yet to mix into drills during Week 13 prep as he contends with an illness. His status at Friday's session thus will be something to watch for, as another DNP could put him in danger of sitting out Sunday against the Seahawks. If he's able to suit up this weekend, Akers likely would be the Rams' No. 2 running back after he handled a 30 percent share of snaps to Kyren Williams' 70 percent this past Sunday at Kansas City.

Akers was held out of Wednesday's practice due to an illness, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: In the wake of the Rams waiving Darrell Henderson last week, Akers ended up playing second fiddle to rookie Kyren Williams out of the team's backfield during this past Sunday's loss at Kansas City. While Akers' snap share (30 percent) paled in comparison to Williams' (70 percent), the former had more rushing yards (37 to 35) while the latter notched more touches (14 to 8) and yards from scrimmage (60 to 37). Little volume in loss
Akers carried the ball eight times for 37 yards in Sunday's 26-10 loss to Kansas City.
Analysis: While he led the Rams' running backs in rushing yards, quarterback Bryce Perkins out-gained Akers on the ground, and rookie Kyren Williams wound up with more scrimmage yards. With the Los Angeles offense in complete disarray, neither RB figures to have much fantasy appeal in Week 13 against the Seahawks -- even against a defense that just coughed up over 300 combined yards to Josh Jacobs.

Likely taking over as lead back
Akers appears set to take over as the top option in the Los Angeles backfield after the team waived Darrell Henderson on Tuesday, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
Analysis: The shocking release of Henderson, who was the Rams' leading rusher with a paltry 283 yards, leaves Akers and rookie Kyren Williams as the only two running backs on the 53-man roster. Ronnie Rivers will likely be summoned from the practice squad to provide another body at the position for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, but look for both Akers and Williams to outpace him in work. Productive with lead-back role
Akers rushed 14 times for 61 yards in the Rams' 27-20 loss to the Saints on Sunday.
Analysis: Akers enjoyed the rare opportunity of breaking away from the Rams' typically confounding running back committee and made good use of the opportunity by tying his season high in rushing yardage. The third-year back has shown more efficiency than usual over the last two games with a combined 20-83 line on the ground in that span, and Sunday's performance may have earned him another chance at the top role in a Week 12 road matchup against the Chiefs.

Stuck in committee
Akers carried the ball six times for 22 yards and failed to catch his only target during Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: The 22 yards actually wound up leading the Rams, as the team's backfield featured a three-way split of the workload between Akers, Darrell Henderson (seven touches) and Kyren Williams (four touches). Working in a sputtering offense behind an injury-ravaged offensive line, it will be almost impossible for any of the backs in this committee to make a fantasy impact in Week 11 against the Saints.

Akers rushed five times for two yards in Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Akers came into his first game since Week 5 averaging just 3.0 yards per carry, and despite facing a subpar run defense, the third-year back actually managed to lower that year-to-date YPC while taking the field for 11 offensive snaps. Akers (personal) is "hoping for a fair resolution" to his tenure with the Rams and prefers not to suit up for the team again in 2022 after he wasn't traded ahead of Tuesday's deadline, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
Analysis: Though Akers is due a manageable $1.45 million for the final year of his rookie deal in 2023, the third-year back's middling production since he returned from a torn Achilles tendon in Week 18 of last season likely limited the interest of potential suitors. Analysis: The modest rushing total actually led the Rams, and if there was a silver lining for Akers it was that he was the only running back on the team to get a carry on the afternoon, as all of Darrell Henderson's touches came as a receiver. Akers hasn't exactly locked up the No. 1 job in the backfield, but he could be poised for a breakout in Week 6 against a Panthers defense that just got gashed for 199 scrimmage yards and three TDs by the 49ers duo of Jeff Wilson and Tevin Coleman.

Analysis: Akers got one more rushing attempt than Darrell Henderson, but Henderson mustered 14 more yards on the ground in addition to catching three passes for 12 yards. While Akers has more upside as a rusher than Henderson, a Rams offense that's averaging just 17.5 PPG through four weeks is struggling to create positive game scripts, and doing so won't be easy in Week 5 against a Cowboys defense that has limited each of its first four opponents to less than 20 points.

Coach Sean McVay said he wants to see "an increased level of urgency and accountability snap in and snap out" from Akers, who got only three carries off the bench in a 31-10 loss to the Bills on Thursday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Darrell Henderson not only got the start but played 82 percent of offensive snaps, taking 13 carries for 47 yards and five catches for 26 yards. Akers rushed three times for no gain and was not targeted in the passing game during the Rams' 31-10 loss to the Bills on Thursday night.
Analysis: Akers was surprisingly 10 carries behind backfield mate Darrell Henderson's final tally, and his lack of involvement altogether in the passing game was also alarming. The 2020 second-round pick was thought to have the leg up on Henderson in terms of their backfield split coming into the season; consequently, how much the workload distribution is altered in a Week 2 home matchup against the Falcons a week from Sunday will be the subject of considerable fantasy scrutiny.

Analysis: At the same time, McVay said fellow running back Darrell Henderson (undisclosed) fit in such a workout Saturday, indicating he's drawing closer to a return to practice. The Rams have less than two weeks remaining before a Week 1 matchup with the Bills on Thursday, Sept. 8, so the sooner Akers and Henderson mix into drills, the better for their prospects to play. Behind that RB duo, Kyren Williams and Jake Funk are the next players up in L.A.'s backfield.

No timetable for return to practice
Coach Sean McVay acknowledged Monday that he doesn't have a timeline for when Akers and Darrell Henderson -- who are both dealing with soft-tissue injuries -- can return to practice, noting, "It could be anywhere between two days, one day, a week," Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Though McVay's estimate for how long the Rams might be without their top two backs isn't specific, it does sound like neither player's issue is viewed as a long term one, with the team simply preferring to play it safe at this stage of the preseason. While Akers and/or Henderson are sidelined, added practice reps will be available for Kyren Williams and Jake Funk.

Set to miss practice time
Coach Sean McVay relayed that Akers is dealing with a "soft tissue" injury and is slated to miss some practice time, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The same applies to fellow running back Darrell Henderson, with McVay noting that neither will practice until they can work at "full speed" in team drills. With the team's top two backfield options unavailable for the time being, Kyren Williams and Jake Funk saw added practice reps Monday, per Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, and they figure to do so until Akers and/or Henderson rejoin the mix.

Looking better after full offseason
Coach Sean McVay recently said Akers has been "getting more comfortable" and "caught up to speed" following his Achilles tear last year, ESPN's Sarah Barshop reports.
Analysis: Akers surprisingly made it back for the playoffs after tearing his Achilles in mid-July, but he didn't look like the same player that ran for 221 yards and two TDs in two playoff games the previous year. The strong finish to his rookie season had Akers going in the second round of fantasy drafts before his injury last summer, and he still has the potential to justify that price tag if he can handle a three-down role in McVay's offense. On the other hand, he'll lose a lot of work to Darrell…read more

Continuing to progress
Akers is aiming to make "big strides" this offseason after making a quicker than expected recovery from a torn Achilles suffered last July, Greg Beacham of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Despite picking up the serious injury just before training camp, Akers was given a chance to return at some point during the 2021 campaign when the Rams opted to place him on the reserve/non-football injury list on Aug. 31 versus injured reserve, the latter of which would have made him ineligible to play. He eventually was activated prior to Week 16 and made his season debut Week 18, and during the Rams' run to a Super Bowl LVI victory he served as the team's primary running back. Stifled in Super Bowl win
Akers rushed 13 times for 21 yards and brought in three of four targets for 14 yards during the Rams' 23-20 win over the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday.
Analysis: Akers comfortably paced the backfield in carries even with Darrell Henderson making his return from injured reserve, but as was the case most of the postseason, he found running room very much at a premium. The second-year back nearly outpaced his rushing yardage total through the air on just three touches, underscoring the tough sledding he encountered on the ground. Naturally, the Super Bowl win for his team is the ultimate consolation, and Akers also could be heartened by the fact that he…read more

Puts in full practice Thursday
Akers (shoulder) practiced fully Thursday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After not practicing at all last week, Akers has ramped up his activity level in short order this week, going from limited at Wednesday's walkthrough to all drills one day later. As a result, the Rams have their top two running backs -- also, Sony Michel -- ready for a Super Bowl LVI matchup with the Bengals. Limited Wednesday
Akers (shoulder) was a limited participant at Wednesday's walk-through practice, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Akers didn't practice at all during the first week of prep for Super Bowl LVI, so Wednesday's development displays a degree of progress from the shoulder injury that he suffered during the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 30. In three playoff games (including two starts) during the Rams' current run, he's averaged 2.8 yards on 54 carries and hauled in five of six targets for 62 yards. Misses third straight practice
Akers (shoulder) appears to be absent from a third straight practice Friday, but Rams coach Sean McVay suggested he expects the running back to play in the Super Bowl against Cincinnati, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: While the Rams list eight players on their injury report this week, McVay suggested only one -- TE Tyler Higbee (knee) -- is in serious danger of missing the big game. It'll be cause for concern if Akers continues to miss practice next week, though it sounds like the Rams expect him to return. There is some chance of a reduced role compared to the past few weeks, as Akers hasn't had much luck running the ball, and Darrell Henderson (knee) could come back from IR for the Super Bowl (he was…read more

Analysis: Akers has yet to practice this week since sustaining a shoulder injury during the Rams' win in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, but he also has more than a week to get healthy ahead of a Super Bowl matchup with the Bengals. He played through the issue this past Sunday, turning 14 touches into 50 yards from scrimmage. No practice Wednesday
Akers (shoulder) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Analysis: Akers missed a portion of the first half of the Rams' recent win in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers due to a shoulder injury, resulting in his second-lowest share of offensive snaps (39 percent) since making his season debut Week 18 following an Achilles tear suffered in July. Mostly held in check
Akers rushed 13 times for 48 yards and brought in his only target for two yards during the Rams' 20-17 win over the 49ers in their NFC Championship Game matchup on Sunday.
Analysis: Akers navigated a shoulder injury that led to a brief exit from the contest in the first half, and while his final yardage total was nothing to write home about, he was more efficient than during a difficult divisional-round performance against the Buccaneers. The second-year back fumbled twice in that game and also was held to 2.0 yards per carry, while Sunday's performance saw him at least average a slightly more palatable 3.7 per tote and not turn the ball over. Struggles mightily in playoff start
Akers ran 24 times for 48 yards and caught all three targets for 20 yards Sunday. He also lost two fumbles in a 30-27 win over the Bucs.
Analysis: Akers was finally given the keys to the Rams' backfield, but the end results were not what many were expecting. The Buccaneers do boast one of the premier rush defenses in the league -- spearheaded by dominant nose tackle Vita Vea -- so that should be factored into the rough go of things under a national spotlight. Approaches 100 scrimmage yards
Akers rushed 17 times for 55 yards in Monday night's 34-11 wild-card round win over the Cardinals. He also caught one of two targets for 40 yards.
Analysis: Akers entered the game behind Sony Michel but went on to lead the Rams in carries, adding some elusiveness to Michel's power-based style. Although he wasn't particularly efficient with his rushes overall, Akers made a big play in the passing game, hauling in a trick-play throw from wideout Odell Beckham during the second half. Sees eight touches in 2021 debut
Akers (Achilles) rushed five times for three yards and caught all three targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Akers made his 2021 debut in Week 18 after missing practically the entirety of the regular season with an Achilles injury. The 21-year-old was eased back into action with just eight total touches while Sony Michel (21-43-0) retained his lead-back role. Akers (Achilles), who is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Ravens, will not play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: This isn't surprising as head coach Sean McVay said Friday that the running back is unlikely to make his season debut. The Rams intend to take a cautious approach with the 2020 second-round pick as he works his way back from an Achilles tear suffered in mid-July. The Rams designated Akers (Achilles) for return from the reserve/non-football injury list Thursday.
Analysis: Akers sustained a torn Achilles while training just before the start of training camp in mid-July. The Rams initially placed him on the active/NFI list before moving him to the reserve version after the preseason, seemingly with the hope that the running back would be healthy for a potential return in the postseason. Could be back for playoff run
Head coach Sean McVay said Monday that he's "definitely not" ruling Akers (Achilles) out from playing if the Rams should qualify for the playoffs, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. "You don't want to be presumptuous at all. We've got to handle our business but if you said we give ourselves an opportunity to play after the season, would there be a possible Cam sighting playing for the Rams? That's not something I would rule out," McVay said.
Analysis: When Akers suffered a torn Achilles tendon in late July, the assumption was he would miss the entirety of the 2021 regular season and postseason. Akers (ankle) was listed as a limited participant on Tuesday's practice estimate, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Akers returned in Week 17 from a high-ankle sprain after missing just one game. There was no indication that Akers was on a pitch count, as the rookie second-rounder logged 25 touches in the 18-7 win over the Cardinals, although his effectiveness was suspect with just 1.6 yards per carry. As long as Akers doesn't downgrade to non-participation for either of the next two sessions, he should be in the lineup for Saturday's wild-card showdown against the Seahawks.

Garners 25 Week 17 touches
Akers totaled 34 yards on 21 carries while corralling all four of his targets for 52 receiving yards during Sunday's 18-7 win against Arizona. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: The second-round rookie had to battle through an ankle injury to suit up against the Cardinals, proving capable of overcoming a questionable tag despite logging just one limited session during the practice week. Though he posted his worst yards-per-carry average of the season, Akers was still provided with 20-plus rush attempts for the third time over his past four outings. Akers' contributions as a pass catcher, meanwhile, left him atop the team's Week 17 leaderboard in receiving yards. As…read more

Available Week 17
Akers (ankle) is active for Sunday's contest against the Cardinals, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Just two weeks removed from suffering a high-ankle sprain, Akers will be available as the Rams vie for slotting in the NFC playoff picture. With Darrell Henderson (ankle) on IR, the Rams may have been swayed by Akers practicing in a limited capacity Friday and not suffering an aggravation in the aftermath of the session. There's a chance Akers merely is available in case of an emergency, but if he serves beyond that capacity, he also could play second fiddle to a healthier Malcolm Brown out of…read more

Expected to try and play Sunday
Akers (ankle), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, is likely to try and play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: After sitting out the Rams' Week 16 loss to the Seahawks with a high-ankle sprain, Akers sat out the team's first two Week 17 practices before he turned in a limited workout Friday. That was enough for Akers to garner the questionable tag heading into the weekend, and the rookie now appears to be gaining confidence that he'll be able to contribute in some capacity in the regular-season finale. Prior to getting hurt, Akers had been serving as the Rams' lead back, but he may only be in store for…read more

Questionable for Week 17
Akers (ankle) returned to practice Friday as a limited participant and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Akers suffered a high-ankle sprain Week 15 and didn't practice or play Week 16. He didn't seem likely to return for the regular-season finale, but the Rams are giving him a shot to suit up, after apparently being encouraged by what they saw Thursday during a workout and then Friday in a limited practice session. Gets in workout Thursday
Coach Sean McVay said Akers (ankle) didn't practice Thursday, but the Rams haven't ruled him out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals after he fit in a workout, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Akers hasn't been seen in the portion of practices open to the media this week, but he appears to be making some progress through the high-ankle sprain that sidelined him Week 16. McVay likely wants Akers to get back on the field in some capacity Friday, at which point the Rams could make a determination on his status for the regular-season finale. Logs DNP on Wednesday
Akers (ankle) was estimated as a non-participant on Wednesday's injury report, Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Analysis: Head coach Sean McVay relayed to Sarina Morales of the Rams' official site that Akers was "making great progress" with his high-ankle sprain, but McVay may have just meant the running back is doing well with the rehab process. Akers has two more opportunities to get on the practice field this week, as does fellow running back Malcolm Brown (shoulder), who was listed as limited Wednesday. Progressing through ankle sprain
Head coach Sean McVay said Akers is "making great progress" in his recovery from a high-ankle sprain, but the running back remains uncertain for Sunday's contest against the Cardinals, Sarina Morales of the Rams' official site reports.
Analysis: After Akers sustained his ankle injury Week 15 against the Jets, Darrell Henderson took on lead back duties this past Sunday versus the Seahawks and suffered the same exact injury. Henderson's sprain is considered more severe since the Rams already placed him on injured reserve, but Akers seems to have a chance to play in a key Week 17 contest. Akers' ability to practice in some capacity Wednesday would be a positive first step toward that end.

Could return Week 17
Akers (ankle) could potentially be available for the Rams' regular-season finale against the Cardinals, J.B. Long of the Los Angeles Rams Radio Network reports.
Analysis: Akers missed Week 16 after suffering a high-ankle sprain but could be rushed back ahead of schedule due to several other key injuries and a playoff spot on the line. Jared Goff (thumb) and Darrell Henderson (ankle) already have been ruled out for the contest. John Wolford will get the start under center and Malcolm Brown will be the primary back available to the Rams if Akers is unable to get the green light. Akers' situation will need to be monitored as the week progresses.

Ruled out Week 16
Akers suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Jets and will be sidelined for the Rams' Week 16 matchup against the Seahawks as a result, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Akers followed up his career game Week 14 against the Patriots by leading the Rams in rushing again Sunday, but he also came out of the contest with an ankle injury. He's expected to be sidelined at least one game, but he could potentially miss more. Should Los Angeles ultimately secure a playoff spot this week, the decision for Week 17 would presumably become easier. Some combination of Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson figure to replace him in the backfield in Seattle.

Leading rusher again
Akers carried the ball 15 times for 63 yards and lost one yard on his only reception (three targets) in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: While he wasn't able to repeat his huge performance from the week before, Akers was still clearly the Rams' No. 1 back, as no other Los Angeles player received more than one carry. The rookie will look to post better numbers during a Week 16 trip to Seattle that will likely decide the winner of the NFC West.

Explodes for career-best effort
Akers (shoulder) rushed 29 times for 171 yards and brought in two of three targets for 23 yards in the Rams' 24-3 win over the Patriots on Thursday night.
Analysis: The only blemish, if it could even be termed as such, on Akers' outstanding night was the fact he didn't get into the end zone, but otherwise, the rookie was as impressive as his numbers imply. The FSU product's long run of the night went for a relatively modest 35 yards, meaning Akers still averaged a robust 4.9 yards per carry on his other 28 totes. Ready for Thursday's game
Akers (shoulder) practiced fully Wednesday and doesn't have a designation for Thursday's game against the Patriots, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Akers progressed from a non-participant Monday to limited activity Tuesday before he was cleared for the Rams' Week 14 contest. With his status not in question, he'll look to continue his recent success from the last two outings, in which he totaled 31 touches for 178 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. During that same stretch, Darrell Henderson had 15 touches for 93 total yards and one score, while Malcolm Brown was contained to 44 total yards on nine touches.

On track to play Thursday
Coach Sean McVay said Tuesday that he expects Akers (shoulder) to play in Thursday's game versus the Patriots, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Akers took the field as a limited participant in Tuesday's walkthrough practice after being listed as DNP on Monday. While the rookie running back earned the vote of confidence well in advance of Thursday's game, there is some concern that his reps could be managed following a condensed practice week, especially given McVay's inclination for a committee backfield. Practice reps capped Tuesday
Akers (shoulder) practiced in a limited capacity Tuesday, Andrew Callahan of Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: After being listed as DNP on Monday's practice estimate, Akers took the field in what Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic called a "glorified walkthrough." It's tough to draw any conclusions from Akers' practice status under those circumstances. It's possible that he's being limited for maintenance purposes after logging a career-high 22 touches in this past Sunday's win over the Cardinals. DNP on Monday's practice estimate
Akers (shoulder) was listed as non-participant on Monday's estimated injury report, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Akers paced the Rams backfield by a large margin Sunday at Arizona, earning 52 offensive snaps to Darrell Henderson's 18 and Malcolm Brown's 13. The result for Akers was 21 carries for 72 yards and one touchdown to go with a 22-yard catch on his only target, while Henderson and Brown combined for nine touches, 101 yards from scrimmage and one TD. Analysis: Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown combined for only six carries and nine touches, marking the second straight week in which Akers has been the Rams' most productive RB. Meanwhile, Darrell Henderson Jr and Malcolm Brown combined for just 23 yards on 13 carries, though Brown added a pair of receptions on three targets. Akers rushed five times for 15 yards and caught a four-yard touchdown pass on his only target during Monday's 27-24 win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Considering the rookie only played 12 of 72 offensive snaps, he certainly made the most of his opportunities, including scoring his first career touchdown. Additionally, while it's clear the Rams are committed to incorporating all three of their running backs into the rushing attack, Akers has still flashed big-play potential over the past three games. Leading rusher in win
Akers carried the ball 10 times for 38 yards in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Seahawks.
Analysis: The Rams deployed a true backfield committee in this one, as Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown saw eight touches each, but while Akers posted the most rushing yards, the other two backs scored three TDs between them. All three backs could struggle to post useful numbers if that workload split continues in Week 11 on the road against a very stingy Buccaneers run defense.

Needs to improve off ball
Coach Sean McVay said Wednesday that Akers needs to improve without the ball in his hands to earn more playing time, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Akers has been buried on the Rams' running back depth chart behind Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown for most of the season. Though Henderson hurt his thigh in last week's loss to the Dolphins, the injury is believed to be minor, so Akers will likely continue to serve as the No. 3 option coming out of the team's bye against Seattle in Week 10. Akers rushed nine times for 35 yards and turned his only target into a 19-yard reception during Sunday's 28-17 loss to Miami.
Analysis: Akers broke a 10-yard gain on his first carry of the game and also looked dangerous while breaking three tackles on his lone reception. The rookie is ready for an expanded role, and while there's still a lot competition in the Los Angeles backfield, sophomore Darrell Henderson sustained a thigh injury Sunday. Analysis: After head coach Sean McVay suggested the rookie was in line for an increased workload, Akers played a single snap Sunday and didn't touch the football. It was a bit surprising, but Los Angeles only had possession for 8:37 in the first half, and No. 1 back Darrell Henderson rushed just six times. Akers (ribs), who carried nine times for 61 yards in the Rams' 30-10 win over the Washington Football Team on Sunday, is slated for more work in a Week 6 road matchup versus the 49ers, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Coach Sean McVay confirmed as much in his postgame press conference after Akers was the Rams' most efficient runner based on a yards-per-carry basis Sunday. A 46-yard run accounted for a bulk of Akers' production, but the 2020 second-round pick nevertheless appears set for more opportunity, albeit in a tough matchup against San Francisco's stingy run defense.

Brown was the superior back Sunday and finished with 110 yards from scrimmage and scored both of Los Angeles' touchdowns. At bottom of depth chart
Akers is listed as the No. 3 running back behind Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson (hamstring) on the Rams' first unofficial depth chart of the 2020 season.
Analysis: "Unofficial" is the key word here and should be taken with a grain of salt. As a five-year veteran and a player about to embark on his fourth season with coach Sean McVay, Brown had a clear path to the top job. Having said that, McVay himself told Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News on Monday that he intends to use a three-back rotation, with touches to be handed out based on how Week 1 prep goes and how Sunday's game versus the Cowboys proceeds. Part of three-man RB committee
Rams head coach Sean McVay said Monday he expects to use a three-man backfield "rotation" consisting of Akers, Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson (hamstring) in Los Angeles' Sept. 13 season opener versus the Cowboys, Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News reports. "That's a three-back rotation that you feel really good about," McVay said. "Exactly how those carries will be distributed is something we'll determine really as the week progresses and as the game unfolds."
Analysis: The three-man committee is contingent on Henderson receiving clearance for Week 1, something McVay said he's "optimistic" will happen. Because Henderson missed extensive practice time with the injury, Akers and Brown appear to be the better bets to handle shares of snaps and touches in the season opener as the Rams transition to life after Todd Gurley. However, it was All-Pro Aaron Donald who dislodged the ball, and Akers' early-season fantasy outlook might have even improved with sophomore Darrell Henderson sustaining a hamstring strain Saturday. Henderson is questionable for Week 1, and while veteran Malcolm Brown was the first running back on the field during the scrimmage, he doesn't offer the same…read more

Could land in committee
Coach Sean McVay mentioned Akers, Malcolm Brown, Darrell Henderson (ankle) and John Kelly as options to take carries in 2020, per The Helliepod podcast.
Analysis: When asked about his backfield, McVay pointed to the division-rival 49ers as a possible blueprint, noting how Kyle Shanahan assembled a top-notch rushing attack without using any one player as a bellcow. Shanahan's approach is a stark contrast from what we've seen in Los Angeles, where Todd Gurley just ripped off four straight seasons with a snap share of 73.9 percent or higher in his active games. New OC pumps tires
Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell praised Akers' determination as a runner and ability to create yardage on his own, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports. "You really saw the amount of personal grit and determination," O'Connell said of Akers' time at Florida State. "He was running against of loaded looks...you see the upside -- I think it was a great running back draft, there was a lot of depth there across the board -- but for us, and for me personally with Cam, just watching and thinking about where he could possible get to and maximized in our offense, it's really exciting."
Analysis: Though O'Connell acknowledged Akers faces a longer learning curve because of the unconventional 2020 offseason, there aren't many other obstacles in the rookie's path to a significant workload out of the backfield. Malcolm Brown's 197 career carries are the most among current Rams running backs, and 2019 third-round selection Darrell Henderson's disappointing rookie season consisted of just 95 offensive snaps over 13 games.
